I know a workaround is not as good as a feature that you are missing but there are some methods that can achieve the same effect, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Rasterize the text, save it, and add it as the fill. Advantage: can edit the shape and keep the fill. Disadvantages: Involves external files. Can no longer edit the text.
